"University of Ibadan Supports EU-Funded Initiative to Improve Nigeria's Food Security"

A research initiative on food security and sustainability in Nigeria, led by a team of researchers, has received support from the University of Ibadan (UI). This backing comes amid concerns over high food prices and inflation in Nigeria, prompting calls for government intervention. The researchers, part of the INCITIS-FOOD Project Consortium funded by the European Union, aim to tackle food security challenges in Africa, with a specific focus on Nigeria. The project involves collaboration between African and European researchers to develop sustainable solutions for urban food systems. University Vice-Chancellor Kayode Adebowale welcomed the Consortium Lead, Gertrud Buchenrieder, expressing optimism about the project's potential to enhance national food security. Acknowledging Nigeria's agricultural constraints, Adebowale emphasized the importance of technological integration to increase food production and affordability. Buchenrieder highlighted the project's focus on providing nutritious food options, including those derived from fish protein, fruits, vegetables, and insects. Additionally, she mentioned plans to support small-scale farmers in the latter stages of the project.
